Pretty Boy Jones started on the path to DJ’ing at age 10 when he took the family turntable from the den to his room and started spinning his father’s collection of soul, blues, folk, and rock records. Soon after, he started spending his time and money learning about music and DJ culture. Hungry for more, PBJ would stay up nights reading Hip-Hop magazines and listening to mixes on the radio. When he realized TV wouldn’t supply the sounds he desired, he would sneak into the local clubs that brought in DJ acts. Although PBJ had yet to recognize his own talent as a DJ, his influences and passion for music had already taken root.
During his freshman year in college, PBJ made a life-altering decision. “In my first semester at college I took the money I was supposed to use for books and spent it on DJ equipment,” he says. “Contrary to what my parents say, it was the best decision I’ve ever made.” Quickly tiring of the overplayed “party songs”, PBJ diversified his music, digging deeper into funk, b-sides, and unique mixes. PBJ’s college years gave him invaluable DJ experience and refined his technical abilities.
Now as an experienced DJ, PBJ plays a wide range of parties and clubs, electrifying the crowd and bringing an intense energy to the atmosphere. Known for blending old joints into new jams, his exclusive mash-ups have helped PBJ to make his mark on the scene. His love for everything from down-tempo, funk, hip-hop, soul and dancehall, to the best beats of the 70’s and 80’s has given him the ability to embrace any type of crowd and create a vibe that is unique each night.
As a founding member of Stickman Productions, PBJ has collaborated on popular shows with talented Boston artists. Their tightly knit group of DJs and promoters now provide the soundtrack to the best nights in the Boston.
“I don't want to play whatever song someone has in their head; I want to play the song they didn't think of. The song they didn't know existed and once they hear it they fall in love.”
– DJ Pretty Boy Jones
